Media Release July 2017

MEDIA RELEASE

3rd July 2017

Looking forward, looking back – Mallee Sustainable Farming celebrates 20 year milestone.

Mallee Sustainable Farming will be celebrating 20 years as it holds its Conference in Mildura, 7th and 8th August for farmers, advisers and Ag industry personnel.

The theme of the Conference ‘Our Future in a Global Food System’ will give delegates an insight into how different sectors are responding to rapid changes in agriculture and how this will impact on-farm.

But MSF is also hoping to take a look back at the last 20 years and celebrate the progress and achievements of our members and the Mallee farming community.

“The progress with farming in the Mallee in the last 20 years has been astounding”, says MSF Chairman Ian Hastings. “In 1997 a group of farmers and researchers came together to form an organization that would transform the face of farming in the Mallee”.

In 20 years farming systems have rapidly changed to be more sustainable through improved seeding practices, more efficient with inputs and more productive with new crop varieties. MSF has been collaborating with farmers and researchers for rapid adoption of new technologies as soon as they become available.

“I don’t think 20 years ago we would have thought the low rainfall Mallee would be producing high value food crops such as lentils and chickpeas, but we are”, says Ian. “Mallee farmers are to be commended on their adaptability, resilience and drive to adopt new innovation. They are amongst the best producers in the country”.

MSF is celebrating their 20 year milestone with a photo competition calling on people to share an agricultural photo from 20 years ago and one from more recent times.

Two free conference tickets including accommodation at the Mildura Grand Hotel are up for grabs with the winners announced 29th July, two weeks prior to the conference. To enter photos need to be emailed with a caption to admin [at] msfp [dot] org [dot] au by Wednesday 25th July.

The photos will be compiled in to a short film and shared with the audience at the Mildura Conference over the course of the two-day conference.

The conference is set to be the networking event not to be missed and promises to be thought provoking and entertaining with TV journalist Pip Courtney MC and celebrity chef Simon Bryant providing dinner entertainment.

The Conference, run by Mallee Sustainable Farming Inc. will begin Monday 7th August 2017 at 11am for registration. This event, able to be held with support from the National Landcare Programme, Grains Research and Development Corporation, Mallee CMA, Sunraysia Petroleum and Sunrise Ag, will be held at the Quality Hotel Mildura Grand on Seventh Street.
