Robust Farming Systems workshop & crop inspection drive

October 11 @ 11:00 am - 3:00 pm UTC+0

Farmers from across the Millewa region of northern Victoria are invited to participate in an exciting new project titled “ROBUST FARMING SYSTEMS: sustainable, innovative and profitable” that will be launched as part of a farmer workshop this coming Tuesday 11th of October at the Lake Cullulleraine Yacht Club.

The new project that is specifically designed to benefit Millewa farmers will be delivered by the Mallee Sustainable Farming team. This project is supported by the Mallee Catchment Management Authority, through funding from the Australian Government’s Future Drought Fund.

There are two components to the project; PART A provides farmers with access to crop management decision making tools and information that will help them to introduce new innovative farming practices that minimise future soil erosion risk; whilst PART B focuses on exploring opportunities for improved livestock production through utilising native perennial shrubs and grazing management.  This workshop program will focus on PART A.

The workshop kicks off at 11am with a short workshop that will introduce farmers to the project, where the focus will be to outline the planned activities over the next 6 months. Details will be provided relating to a free offer of providing farmers with access to EM38 paddock soil mapping, soil nutrient and soil moisture testing to assist them in planning for their 2023 cropping program and develop a “farming to soil type” plan for their property. MSF are also keen to establish a local “Community of Practice” discussion group for local Millewa farmers as the project tis rolled out over the next 6 months.

Complimentary lunch will be provided, followed by a crop inspection drive south to Werrimul from 1pm and 3pm. Farmers will have the opportunity to look at some local crops and demonstration trials that have been conducted by Mallee Sustainable Farming and local farmers
